Clunes Ceramics Awards, 2011
I enjoy nothing more than a trip out into the countryside. I should like to do it more often and at times I wish I could be in both places simultaneously, so whenever the opportunity arises I jump at the chance to throw together an overnight bag and hit the road.
My partner and I enjoy spending time in Clunes, Victoria and I had heard that the ceramics award which had opened on the 11th September was drawing to a close. I was hoping to see some good old eathernware pottery mugs and perhaps an occasional ashtray, when in fact I was stopped dead in my tracks as we entered the Union Bank Arts Centre.
Not only where there works from some of my favourite Australian ceramicists, Kirsten Cohelo and Phil Elson but I also discovered pieces from new, local talent of which had not seen before. It was a wonderful surprise. With over 100 submissions for the annual Clunes Ceramics Award the carefully edited and curated body of work of the finalists, was what I would say of a very high standard.
Sadly, it finishes this weekend on 2nd October so you must remember to make a note in your diary to plan a day trip for 2102.
